Lady Senators’ Turner plays through pain

Page Turner’s senior season at Davis & Elkins College is one the starting point guard won’t soon forget, and for more reasons than one.

Turner has successfully helped pace the Lady Senators (15-11, 14-7 West Virginia Conference) to a winning record this year as she leads the team in three statistical categories – she’s tied with teammate Jorden Lykes in scoring at (11.7), and is tops in assists (4.7) and steals (2.3). But what makes those numbers on the stat sheet even more impressive is Turner has excelled literally on one leg.

Turner has suffered through shin splints in her left leg the entire season.

“It’s been very tough playing through this injury,” Turner said. “I can feel the pain, but when my adrenaline gets going it isn’t that noticeable.”

Besides leading the team in scoring, steals and assists, Turner is also the squad’s top three-point shooter, making 51 of 140 attempts on the season, including five in Saturday’s 65-49 win over rival West Virginia Wesleyan.

Turner has reached double figures seven times this season with her highest point total coming on Dec. 15, when she hit for 23 against West Virginia State.

“Page is a leader on this team,” D&E coach Jason Asbell said. “Our team feeds off her energy and determination.”

Turner was named Senator of the Month in December when she went over 1,000 points for her career.

“Page going over 1,000 points is an example of her toughness and skill set,” Asbell said. “She has improved every year, and we want to make sure this season goes as long as possible. “She is an amazing young lady and will do whatever it takes to help our team get a victory.”

When off the court, Turner gets around campus on crutches or with a walking boot. Security officers help take her from class-to-class throughout the day.

“I want to thank the campus security for all of their help,” Turner said. “They go out of their way and I really do appreciate it.”

Right now, Turner’s focus is on helping her Lady Senators get a win in the WVIAC tournament, not her injury. The Lady Senators enter the field as the No. 4 seed and will entertain Alderson-Broaddus tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the McDonnell Center.

“I’m going to have an x-ray done at the end of the season,” Turner said. “It could be a lot of things, but I’m going to wait and see what happens. Right now I just want to help my team win games.”
