PHILIPPI -Amber Evans scored 15 points and Tucker County used a strong first half on the defensive end to defeat Tygarts Valley 53-22 Friday night in the Class A, Region II, Section 1 championship game at Rex Pyles Arena on the campus of Alderson-Broaddus College..

The Lady Mountain Lions (18-5) advances to the Region II final and will host the loser of today’s Pendleton County at Pocahontas County contest at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Tygarts Valley also advances to Region II play and will travel to the winner of the Pocahontas County- Pendleton County contest on the same night.

Bekah Simmons followed with 10 points, while Savannah Ambrose had eight points, eight blocks and five rebounds for the Tucker County, which led 29-8 at halftime and 38-11 after three quarters of play.

Hunter Radford, Stephanie Betler and Olivia Miller had five points each.

“I thought our defense was awesome tonight,” Tucker County coach Jim Ambrose said. “The early part of the game was huge for us.

“I thought Savannah came up big defensively with eight blocks and Amber and Bekah really played well offensively for us tonight.”

Shanda Howell finished with a team-high eight points, while Paige Pritt added five points for the Lady Bulldogs (16-7).

“We didn’t play well tonight,” Tygarts Valley coach Mike DiPasquale said. “Thats the best defensive game I have seen Tucker play all season

“We couldn’t get anything going tonight, and the first five minutes of the game were the difference in the game.”

Hampshire 54, Elkins 36

ROMNEY – Elkins dropped a 54-36 decision to Hampshire in the Class AAA,?Region II, Section 2 title game on Friday night.

The Lady Tigers will now travel to Hedgesville in a regional contest at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Hedgesville defeated Martinsburg 66-50 to win its section on Friday.

Hampshire will entertain Martinsburg on the same evening.
