Tucker, Tygarts Valley look for state berths

Four teams familiar with one another will battle for two Class A state tournament berths this evening.

Tucker County (18-5) and Pocahontas County (16-5) earned homecourt advantage as sectional champions in the regional final affair among the four Potomac Valley Conference members.

The Lady Mountain Lions will host Pendleton County and won both regular-season games.

Tygarts Valley, meanwhile, lost on a last-second shot in its lone contest against Pocahontas County earlier this season in Dumore.

Tucker County, which defeated Tygarts Valley to win its section, is led in scoring by senior guard Amber Evans and junior guard Stephanie Betler. Savannah Ambrose, a 6-1 junior center, leads the frontcourt. She had eight blocked shots in the sectional title game.

The Lady Wildcats (12-8) counter with Danielle Gray, Nicole Hedrick and Hillary Ord, who had 17 rebounds in the sectional loss to Pocahontas County.

Shanda Howell will lead Tygarts Valley (16-7) in its contest with the Lady Warriors, who counter with Heather Snead, who fired in 22 points in the sectional title contest.

The state tournament will begin Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center. The pairings will be announced on Friday.
