D&E baseball team splits with W.Va. State
CHARLESTON – The Davis & Elkins College baseball team split a pair of games with West Virginia State Friday in West Virginia Conference action.
The Senators lost the first game 5-3 before rebounding to take the nightcap, 5-3.
Josh Kehr took the loss for the Senators in a complete-game effort in the opener. He gave up five runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out four.
Anthony Ragos had three hits and scored a run, while Treavor Dubiel had two hits and a RBI for D&E.
Taylor Hyssong picked up the win in the second game in 5 2/3 innings of work. He gave up three runs on three hits, walked four and struck out six.
Tripp Staley pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, striking out two to earn the save.
Lance VanNoy had two hits, including a double and three RBIs, while Matt Moceri had two hits and an RBI for the Senators (12-12).
“It was a solid day of baseball for us,” D&E coach Ron Palmer said. “We had our chances in the first game (to win) but we still can win the series.”
The teams will meet again at noon today.
Hampshire 5, Elkins 3
ROMNEY – The Elkins High School baseball team lost to Hampshire 5-3 Friday in non-conference action.
Colby Gainer took the loss for the Tigers in five innings of work on the mound.
Clayton Collett had two hits and scored a run, while Silas Gibson had two hits for the Tigers. Jake Wyatt also had a two-run single for Elkins.
“We need to play better defensively,” Elkins coach Adam Roth said. “A few mistakes are costing us wins in these close games.”
Elkins (0-3) will travel to Lewis County at 7 p.m. Monday for a Big 10 Conference tilt.
