Elkins tennis teams roll

The Elkins High School tennis team defeated East Fairmont 5-2 Friday in Big 10 conference action at Davis & Elkins College.

Elkins won the boys match, 5-2.

Taking wins in singles competition were Tommy Cain, Ryan Henson and Taylor Stump.

In doubles action, Henson-Linkoln Barger and Sean Cain-Tommy Cain earned victories.

The Lady Tigers won their match also by a score of 5-2.

Kelli Carr, Kayla Carr and Taylor Gadd won in single competition.

The teams of Kelli Carr-Kayla Carr and Bradley Gutta-Caitlyn Gutta won in doubles for Elkins.

“This was a great opening win for us,” Elkins coach Brandon Simmons. “It was nice to see the boys and girls both win their matches today.”

Elkins will host Philip Barbour at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for a conference matchup.

College baseball

D&E takes two from UC

CHARLESTON – Davis & Elkins swept a pair of games from the University of Charleston Friday in West Virginia Conference baseball action.

The Senators won the first game 11-2 and completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

Josh Kehr notched the win in the lidlifter in a complete- game effort. He gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out six.

Anthony Ragos had two hits and four runs scored, while Travis Phelps added two hits and three RBIs for the Senators.

Taylor Hyssong tossed a one-hitter in the second game.

He walked two, fanned eight and gave up two runs.

Matt Moceri and Ragos each knocked in two runs for the Senators, while Ryan Butts had two hits and an RBI and Treavor Dubiel two hits.

“This is the cleanest baseball we have played all season,” D&E coach Ron Palmer said. “We hit the ball, we threw strikes and played well defensively.”

D&E (8-15, 5-5 WVC) and Charleston will meet again at 1 p.m. today.
