Nichols fires in 23 to pace Minutemen

WESTON – Joe Nichols had 23 points to lead Lewis County past Elkins 71-58 Friday in the Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 championship game.

Lewis County will entertain Washington, which lost to Martinsburg on Friday, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in one regional final matchup.

Elkins, meanwhile, will travel to Martinsburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the other regional contest.

John Riley followed with 19 points, while Skylar Carlton chipped in 13 points for the Minutemen, who led 40-32 at halftime and 56-47 after three quarters of play.

Logan Phillips and Tyler Shreve had 11 points each for the Tigers (14-9).

Colby Gainer and Braden Hammond added nine points each, while L.J. Lawrence had eight points for Elkins.

“I thought it was a good game tonight,” Elkins coach John Lawson said. “Both teams played well and whenever we went on a run they answered back on us

“It was a physical game and we just didn’t get the job done.”
