WVU to visit Kansas

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia will look to halt a three-game losing skid when it visits No. 5 Kansas today.

Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at historic Allen Fieldhouse and the action will be televised on CBS.

The Jayhawks have a 159-8 record under coach Bill Self at home.

“It’s loud, I mean really loud,” Mountaineer coach Bob Huggins said of Allen Fieldhouse. “The impressive thing about the Kansas fans is if they’re playing West Virginia or if they’re playing Kansas State or if they’re playing Prairie View, they’re going to have 18,000-plus in there.

“They’re in to it from tipoff until the end of the game. They do a great job of supporting their team, and I think their team feeds off that enthusiasm.”

West Virginia (13-15, 6-9 Big 12) is coming off a 65-62 home loss to Baylor on Wednesday. The Mountaineers are led in scoring average by freshman guard Eron Harris (9.3 points), junior center Aaric Murray (8.8) and senior forward Deniz Kilicli (8.8). Murray also is averaging a team-best 6.2 rebounds per contest.

Harris had a career-high 25 points in Wednesday’s loss.

The league-leading Jayhawks (24-4, 12-3) counter with freshman guard Ben McLemore, who is averaging 15.9 points. Senior center Jeff Withey contributes 13.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Senior guard Elijah Johnson is coming off a career-high 39 points in Kansas’ 108-96 double overtime victory at Iowa State on Monday night.

West Virginia has faced the Jayhawks only once in school history, a 61-56 Kansas victory back on Jan. 28.

The Mountaineers will remain on the road Wednesday at Oklahoma, before concluding regular-season play next Saturday at home against Iowa State.
