B-U holds off Liberty, 9-5

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur built an early lead and had to withstand a comeback attempt from Liberty in claiming a 9-5 victory Tuesday in Big 10 Conference action.

The Bucs (11-9, 5-2 Big 10) appeared to be in control, leading 7-0 after four innings.

But the Mountaineers struck for three runs in the fifth and tacked on another in the sixth to get within 7-4.

The hosts answered with a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to regain control.

“Once again we hit the ball early and then put it in cruise control,” B-U head coach Tom Hasbrouck said. “Liberty came back and made a game out of it, and I think our youth rose to the surface and showed its head.

“I was happy to see us come alive late and add some runs.”

Claire Davis led the offensive attack for the Bucs, going 3-for-4 and driving in four runs. Claire Linger added three hits, while Megan Williams had two hits and three RBIs, and Brooklyn Waddell and Julie Tenney two safeties each.

Williams went all seven innings to earn the win. She gave up five run on 10 hits, fanned four and walked one.

Lexi Corder, Abbie Smith and Megan Morton each had two hits for Liberty. Corder took the loss, allowing nine runs on 14 hits in six innings. She struck out one and walked three.

B-U will travel to University at 4:30 p.m. today.
