Coach gets support from team

The Buckhannon-Upshur High lacrosse team surprised their coach, Hannah Lively, with an evening of Multiple Sclerosis awareness a recent home game against Morgantown High School.

Lively, a 2006 graduate of B-UHS and a 2011 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan, was diagnosed with this disease during her sophomore year of college.

This effort was spearheaded by players Ashley Barlow and Delana Teets. Team members made shirts that read “Lady Bucs Lacrosse wear ORANGE for our coach: Multiple Sclerosis Awareness,” displayed large signs with MS facts posted around the stadium and distributed fact fliers to spectators.

Fans were asked to wear orange and fill the stands with homemade signs and donations were collected at the gate. The team also held a raffle earlier in the season.

“I have the best team ever, thank you for all the support.” Lively said. “I cannot explain how much it means. You all are number one, hands down.”

MS affects more women than men in a 2:1 ratio and is often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40.

There is no cure for MS, but there are many effective ways to manage the disease. Major symptoms of MS include, muscle weakness, decreased coordination, blurred or hazy vision, eye pain, double vision and extreme fatigue.

“The efforts of the Lady Bucs lacrosse team should be commended,” said Alisa Lively, Lively’s mother and director of campus life at Wesleyan. “If this effort to push MS awareness helps even one person, then the team’s hard work has paid off.”
