D&E hires new coach

Davis & Elkins College announced Monday the hiring of Chris Cottrell as the new men’s basketball coach.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity at Davis & Elkins,” Cottrell said by phonoe Monday. “President Buck Smith has done a good job with the campus within the last five years.”

Cottrell takes over for former coach Bruce Martin, who was let go at the end of last season.

Cottrell comes to Davis & Elkins after spending the last five years as a full-time assistant coach at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee.

Before his time at Lincoln Memorial, Cottrell was the assistant coach at Highpoint University in North Carolina.

He helped lead his team to a 25-6 record last year and a South Atlantic Conference regular season title.

Lincoln Memorial made it to the second round of the Division II NCAA tournament last year.

Cottrell has hired one new assistant coach, Cam Carden, who was a four-year player at Lincoln Memorial.

“I’m excited to bring Carden with me,” Cottrell said. “I have met with the team once already and we’re excited to get things going.”

The Senators will be moving to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in July.

“I think its great to be moving into a new conference,” Cottrell said. “I think it will be one of the top conferences in the region.”

“We’re excited to have Chris as part of our staff,” Davis & Elkins Athletic Director Ron Palmer said. “He has done a great job with the last five years at Lincoln Memorial, so hopefully that will continue.

“I think he will be a great fit for our program at Davis & Elkins,” Palmer said Monday. “I think he has some very good ideas.”
