Elkins High boys stay perfect in Big 10 play

The Elkins High School boys tennis team stayed undefeated in Big 10 Conference play with a 7-0 victory over Philip Barbour Wednesday at Davis & Elkins College.

In singles play, earning wins for the Tigers (9-2, 6-0 Big 10) were No. 1 Jonathan Gainer over Mike Mitchell, 8-0; No. 2 Jacob Schoonover over Ian Nuzum, 8-2; No. 3 Taylor Stump over Josh Stuart, 8-0; and No. 4 Ryan Henson over Troy Lawson, 8-0.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Gainer-Schoonover defeated Mitchell and Nuzum, 8-0; No. 2 Henson-Linkoln Barger defeated Stuart-Lawson, 8-1; and No. 3 Tommy Cain-Stump defeated Shay Mitchell-Gunnar Poling, 8-1.

The EHS girls claimed a 7-1 victory.

Earning wins for the Tigers in singles were No. 1 Kelli Carr over Taylor Chevalier, 8-1; No. 2 Kayla Carr over Adalou Pharis, 8-0; and No. 3 Taylor Gadd over Hannah Gregg, 8-0.

Philip Barbour’s Marinda Donegia defeated Elkins’ Tia Skinner in No. 4 singles, 8-2.

Winning in doubles for Elkins (7-4) were the No. 1 team of Kelli Carr-Kayla Carr over Taylor-Chevalier, 8-1; No. 2 Taylor Epperson-Kayla Gainer over Donegia-Jordan Bowers, 8-3; and No. 3 Bradley Gutta-Caitlin Gutta over Madison Sandridge-Abby Suder, 8-4.

Elkins will visit Bridgeport at 4 p.m. today.

Prep baseball

East Hardy 12, Pendleton County 2, 6 innings

BAKER – Tyler Mongold smacked a grand slam and earned the win on the mound to lead East Hardy past Pendleton County 12-2 in six innings Wednesday night in Potomac Valley Conference action.

The Cougars (11-6, 9-1 PVC) erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game.

Korey Foltz also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases for East Hardy, while Cody Walker was 2-for2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Luke Yokum was 2-for-2 with a solo homer for the Wildcats.

Daniel Hevener took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out four.

Mongold went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out eight.

The Cougars will host Man at 6 p.m. Friday.

Pendleton County will travel to Moorefield at 5 p.m. Friday for a Potomac Valley Conference contest.
