Elkins High’s Stump captures Big 10 tennis title

CLARKSBURG – The Elkins High School boys and girls tennis teams competed in the Big 10 Conference championships Friday at Robert C. Byrd High School.

The Tigers’ Taylor Stump earned a conference tile in No. 3 singles, while Jacob Schoonover lost in the championship in No. 2 singles.

“Taylor really played well today,” Elkins coach Brandon Simmons said. “He was really strong from the start and I’m proud of his effort.

“Jacob really played well, too. He got down and couldn’t get out of the hole. I’m proud of both boys.”

The doubles competition will begin at 8 a.m. today at Robert C. Byrd High School.

Middle school softball

EMS downs East Fairmont

Abby Collett had two hits to lead Elkins past East Fairmont 10-2 Friday in middle school play.

Collett also had a home run for the Hornets (11-2).

Alyssa Thompson, Korri Evans and Sierra Poling all added hits.

Susan Riggleman picked up the win for the Hornets in four innings of work. She gave up two walks and struck out seven.

Lauren Wilmoth pitched one inning of relief.

Elkins will host Lumberport at 4:30 p.m. Monday for a doubleheader.
