Gibson’s three-hitter sparks EHS

Silas Gibson twirled a three-hitter to spark Elkins past Grafton 9-0 Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

Gibson struck out five and didn’t walk a batter for the Tigers, who have won six straight games to even their record to 7-7.

“Silas really pitched well tonight,” Elkins coach Adam Roth said.

“He threw strikes and we played good defense behind him.”

Gibson helped himself at the plate with a key three-run double in bottom of the third inning, while Garrett Riggleman added a two-run single in the same inning to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead after three innings.

The Tigers made it 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Summerfield.

Elkins scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run single from Colby Gainer to finish the scoring.

Clayton Collett added a double and run scored, while Tyler Shreve had a single and a run scored, Logan Phillips a single and run scored, Jake Wyatt a hit and Kollin Hopwood two runs scored for Elkins.

“We got some timely hits tonight,” Roth said. “We got the hits when we needed them.”

Thomas Peters took the loss for Grafton (3-8) in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Abraham Blair, Chuck McCloy and Justice Keener all had hits for the Bearcats.

Elkins will host area rival Buckhannon-Upshur today. The game will be played at either 4:30 or 7 p.m., depending on the weather conditions at game time.
