B-U girls win third straight title

TENNERTON?- The Buckhannon-Upshur girls captured their third straight Big 10 Conference title Friday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

The Bucs finished with151 points to outdistance North Marion (90) and Bridgeport (76). East Fairmont placed fourth with 44 points, followed by Preston (40), Fairmont Senior (38), Liberty (36), Philip Barbour (32), Lincoln (27), Elkins (12), Robert C. Byrd (8), Grafton (2) and Lewis County (1).

Emily Godwin led B-U with first-place finishes in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, and the high jump. MacKenzie Leigh, meanwhile, captured the shot put and discus, while teammate Mercedes Dowell was second in both events.

Katy Riley also captured the pole vault with a jump of 9-0.

The Bucs also captured the shuttle hurdle relay in a time of 1:06.81. Team members included Lisa Fidler, Riley, Courtney Reed and Cvechko.

Philip Barbour’s Brianna Waybright also had a solid showing, finishing third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600.

Elkins’ Kathlyne Simmons was third in the long jump, while teammate Ashley Simmons was fifth in the shot put.

Bridgeport took the boys title with 117 points. B-U was second with 96.5 points, followed by Preston (74), Fairmont Senior (68), Lewis County (57), Grafton (44), East Fairmont (41.5), Robert C. Byrd (25), Elkins (11), North Marion (10), Philip Barbour (8), Lincoln (4) and Liberty (2).

Stetson West (400), Marcus Lofton (high jump) and Issac Johnson (shot put) all had first-place finishes for the Bucs.

B-U also captured the 4×200 (George Clem, Austin Sayre, West, Lofton) and the 4×400 (West, Clem, Sayre, Seth Cutright).

Philip Barbour’s Quentin Mouser was fourth in the high jump, while Elkins’ Michael Beckwith was fourth in the shot put.

B-U and Elkins will compete in the Class AAA Region II meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis County High School. The state meet is May 17-18 in Charleston.
