Cougars advance to finals

FRANKLIN – Tyler Mongold pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead East Hardy past Pendleton 8-5 Tuesday in the Class A, Region II semifinal acton.

The Cougars (23-10) will battle Notre Dame at Frank Loria Field in Clarksburg at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the regional final. The Irish defeated Tucker County 19-0 on Tuesday to advance.

Mongold walked three and struck out five in earning the win. He helped his cause at the plate with three hits for the Cougars.

Bryce Strawderman had two hits, including a key two-run single in a three-run fifth inning that allowed East Hardy to build a 6-2 lead.

Wyatt Basye also had two hits and two RBIs for the Cougars, while Shawn Skovron had two hits and scored a run and Cole Collier two hits.

Daniel Hevener took the loss for the Wildcats in seven innings of work.

Jesse Lambert had three hits and drove in a run, while Luke Yokum had two hits and an RBI for Pendleton County, which stranded 14 runners on the night, including leaving the bases loaded in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Logan Raines added a solo homer.

“We got very lucky to win tonight,” East Hardy coach Raymond Snapp said. “We made some mistakes and so did (Pendleton County). “We got some timely hits and managed to pull out the win.”

Pendleton County finishes its season with a 19-11 record.
