D&E golf team to play in regionals

Davis &?Elkins will compete in the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional golf championship that begins Monday at Oglebay Resort’s R.T. Jones Course.

The tournament runs through Wednesday and each of the three rounds begins at 7:30 a.m. on the rolling 7,001-yard, par 71 course.

Wilmington (Del.) is the defending champ.

Other West Virginia Conference teams entered include Concord, Bluefield State and Charleston.

The top three teams and the two individuals with the lowest 54-hole medal scores who aren’t members of the three qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Division II national championship tournament, May 20-24, at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club.

FAIRMONT?- Elkins closed regular-season play with a 14-5 setback to Fairmont Senior Friday in Big 10 Conference action.

Ryan Summerfield took the loss for the Tigers in two innings of work. He face up five runs on four hits, struck out nine and walked four.

Colby Gainer went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Logan Phillips 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Kollin Hopwood 1-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Elkins at the plate.

The Tigers will host Hampshire at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in sectional action at Elkins High School.

Petersburg 7, Pendleton County 2

FRANKLIN – Alex See homered for the second straight day as Petersburg earned a 7-2 win over Pendleton County on Friday.

Ryan Colaw added a double and two RBIs for the Vikings, who improved to 21-7.

Brandon George earned the win, allowing just two hits and striking out four in three innings.

Tim Hevener took the loss for the Wildcats. He gave up four runs six hits.

Daniel Hevener had an RBI single in a losing effort.

Pendleton County (16-10) will begins sectional action at 6 p.m. Monday against Pocahontas County. The second game of the best-of-three series will be played in Dunmore on Tuesday.
