Double Vision

Opponents facing the Elkins High School girls tennis team this spring have gotten a double dose of twin power.

The Carr sisters, Kayla and Kelli, along with the Gutta sisters, Caitlin and Bradley, form double teams for the Tigers.

Both sets of twins have had successful seasons for Elkins, which begins regional competition today at Jefferson High School.

The Carr’s are the No. 1 doubles team and captured the Big 10 title last week.

“We like to keep each other focused and motivated,” said Kayla Carr, who is 11 minutes younger than her sister. “That’s what makes us a good doubles team.”

Kelli Carr said the duo work together as a team, on and off the court.

The sisters hosted a Zumbathon fundraiser in March, which helped raise money for tennis uniforms this season.

“I think our games compliment one other very well,” Kelli Carr said. “I have more of a net game and Kayla likes to play the baseline.”

Elkins coach Brandon Simmons said the sisters are role models for the younger players.

“It’s been nice coaching the Carr sisters the past couple of years,” Simmons said. “They have been senior and team leaders for us.”

The sisters, however, will head their separate ways in college, as Kelli will attend West Virginia University and Kayla is headed to Davis &?Elkins College.

While the Carr sisters can somewhat be identified at first look, that’s not the case for the Gutta twins, who are identical.

The Gutta’s, playing No. 3 doubles, went undefeated in Big 10 Conference play this spring with the lone loss coming to Washington.

“It’s been fun this year,” said Caitlin Gutta, who is 3 seconds older than her sister. “We’ve liked playing as double partners and have had a lot of success.”

Bradley Gutta has high goals for the sisters in regionals.

“I think we have a good chance of winning,” she said. “But we’re going to have to play our best to move on to states.”

Simmons is glad to the Gutta’s will return next season.

“They’ve had a very good year for us at No. 3 doubles,” he said. “They plan to work hard this summer and come back next season as our No. 1 doubles team.”
