Trojans bounce back to best Tigers
ROMNEY – Hampshire bounced back from a loss to Elkins on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep on Thursday to win the Class AAA, Region II, Section 3 tournament title.
The 23-3 Trojans, who lost to Elkins 5-3 on Wednesday, won the first game 7-4 and claimed the sectional banner with a 13-3 win in six innings in the nightcap.
Matt Maiers picked up the win for Hampshire in seven innings of work in the lidlifter.
Maiers also had two hits and three RBIs.
Issac Riggleman took the loss for the Tigers in six innings of work.
Garrett Riggleman had one hit and scored two runs, while Colby Gainer, Tyler Scott and Kollin Hopwood all had singles for Elkins.
Josh Crawford picked up the win in the second game for Hampshire in complete-game effort.
David Delawder had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs, while Bucky Timbrook had two hits and scored a run for the Trojans.
Ben Lonergan took the loss in three innings of work for Elkins.
Scott had two hits and scored a run, while Clayton Collett had one hit and scored a run for the Tigers.
Gainer also had a hit for Elkins in the deciding game.
“I was proud of how our kids never quit tonight,” Elkins coach Adam Roth said. “We played a very good team and I could see them in the state tournament this year.”
Elkins finished its season with a 14-12 record.
