Viney having season to remember

Former Elkins High School track standout Cam Viney has had a year to remember at University of Illinois.

Viney, who is in his first year of collegiate track, has qualified for the NCAA Championships that will get underway in Eugene, Ore., on June 5.

Viney qualified on the 4×4 relay team, as they finished third overall and first in their heat in the West Regionals Saturday.

The relay team, consisting of D.J. Zahn, Viney, Juan Paul Green and Stephon Pamilton, finished the relay with a time of 3:05.53.

“It feels great to qualify for the NCAA Championships,” Viney told The Inter-Mountain by phone Monday evening. “I’m so blessed to be able to experience such an incredible opportunity in my freshman year.

“We have a good chance to really make a statement in Oregon,” Viney said. “The other three runners on my 4×4 team are phenomenal athletes and have huge potential.”

If the 4×4 relay team can finish in the top eight at the Nationals they may receive All-American honors.

“If we can go out there and do our job we can receive All-American honors,” Viney said. “We just need to run the race how we’re capable of running.”

Viney had another chance to qualify for the NCAA championships, but just fell a little short in the 400-meter hurdles.

He placed fourth with a time of 51.87; only the top three qualified for the Nationals.

“Heading into the season, I never thought I would have a shot for Nationals,” Viney said. “When I fell a little short on qualifying, I was kind of bummed, but I’ve got something to work for next season.”
