Witt leads Jefferson past B-U
TENNERTON – Alexandria Witt pitched a complete-game effort to lead Jefferson past Buckhannon-Upshur 6-3 Friday to win the Class AAA, Region II final.
The Lady Cougars (20-8) move on to the state tournament, which gets underway Tuesday in Parkersburg.
Witt gave up three runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out three for Jefferson.
“I thought Alexandria really pitched well tonight,” Jefferson coach Mary Beth Group said. “We played very good defense behind her, which we needed.”
Jefferson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Lauren Lewis hit a solo home run to left field.
Jefferson tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth inning as Jenna Witt and Alexandria Witt came up big with RBI singles.
The Lady Bucs cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sarah Ling had an RBI single that scored Claire Davis.
Jefferson scored one more run in the top of the fifth inning as Jenna Witt hit a solo home run to make it 6-1.
Buckhannon-Upshur scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Davis hit a two-run double, scoring Julie Tenney and Megan Williams to make it 6-3.
Alexandria Witt had two hits and an RBI to lead the Lady Cougars at the plate.
“I thought we were patient at the plate tonight,” Group said. “We got some timely hits at the plate and had the one big inning, which helped us.”
Brooklyn Waddell had three hits to lead the Lady Bucs at the plate.
Davis had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run, while Ling and Megan Williams had singles for B-U.
“Jefferson wanted it more then us,” Buckhannon-Upshur coach Tom Hasbrouck said. “When you don’t score that many runs you can’t win games.
“I’m proud of the girls,” he said. “They never gave up and fought until the very end of the game. We had a great season.”
Buckhannon-Upshur finished the year with a 19-12 record.
