Broughton’s, Citizens earn tourney wins
Broughton’s Sports overcame an early six-run deficit to beat Elkins Suzuki 8-7 in the late game Wednesday night in Fuzz Jones Memorial Tournament action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Elkins Suzuki scored six runs over the first two innings to build a 6-0 cushion before Broughton’s mounted a comeback.
After picking up a pair of runs in the top of the third, Broughton’s plated five more in the fourth to grab a 7-6 lead.
Jordan Schumacher had a two-run single during the uprising, while Sam Nestor cracked a run-producing single and Trevor Haden drew a bases-loaded walk to put Broughton’s in front.
Elkins Suzuki tied the game in the fifth when Jace Kyle walked with the bases loaded.
Broughton’s answered with the eventual winning run in the sixth when Kole Hopwood raced home on a wild pitch.
Elkins Suzuki threatened in the home-half of the frame, loading the bases with one out.
But Haden entered and recorded the final two outs to preserve the win.
The game ended after the sixth inning due to the time limit.
Jared Kerns earned the win in relief.
Rece Wamsley took the loss. He also was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double.
In Wednesday’s opening game, Citizens Bank claimed a 13-1 win over Upshur County Gold in six innings.
Shane Bodkin went 3 for 4 with six RBIs, including a two-run homer, to power CB. Luke Petrice and Kyle Riggleman added two hits each.
Riggleman earned the win, allowing five hits and fanning 10.
Noah Yokum was the losing pitcher.
The tournament continues today as Broughton’s will face Lizard Graphics (Barbour County) at 6 p.m. and Elkins Fordland battles the Barbour Patriots at 8:10 p.m.
