High Point rolls past Patriots

High Point Construction and the Barbour County Patriots battled in the second day of the Fuzz Jones Invitational Friday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

The Upshur County squad came away with a 16-1 decision in a game called in the fourth inning.

The contest was a mismatch from the outset as High Point Construction, after blanking the Patriots in the top half of the first inning, scored six runs in the home half of the frame, taking advantage of three hits and three errors.

The dominance of the Upshur team continued throughout the contest as pitcher Ben Cunningham struck out nine batters, including fanning the side in the second inning, on his way to a one-hitter.

Cunningham also was the star of the game at the plate, finishing with three RBIs.

In total, the Upshur County team belted out 10 hits and was the beneficiary of nine errors by the Patriots. High Point Construction never scored less than four runs per inning until the bottom of the fourth.

They had runners on base when the game was called.

The Barbour Patriots ended the night with only three base runners with the only hit coming by Sean Curtis. Chris Neville was credited with the Patriots’ lone RBI.

Elkins Suzuki faced Upshur County Gold in Friday’s late game.

High Point Construction will be back in action against Allegheny Insurance at noon today.

The Barbour Patriots will return to play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Davis Trust Company.

Other games on tap for today include Upshur County Gold vs. Pendleton County at 2:15 p.m. Citizens Bank vs. Pendleton County at 4:30 p.m. and Elkins Fordland vs. Master’s Pest Management (Upshur County) at 6:45 p.m. Three contests will be held on Sunday starting at 2:15 p.m.

The invitational will continue through next week, concluding with the championship game at 4 p.m. on June 9.
