Lewis’ Harvey shines on both sides of the ball
Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of features on area players selected to the North-South All-Star Football Classic to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
Lewis County’s Wilson Harvey had a tremendous effect for the Minutemen during the fall on both sides of the ball.
Wilson and his Lewis County teammates earned the school’s first-ever playoff win with an upset victory over University. The Minutemen lost in the second round to George Washington.
Harvey, a 6-1, 240-pound defensive tackle/offensive guard, earned Class AAA, All-State first-team honors and was a first-team selection on the Big 10 Conference team. He was a captain for the Minutemen and had six sacks from his defensive tackle position.
“Wilson was a great player on the field for us, but he’s going to be missed even more for his work off the field,” Lewis County coach Eddie Vincent said.
Vincent described Harvey as “a team and community leader, a 4.0 student, liked and respected by everyone on the team and in the school.”
Wilson felt “honored and blessed” to be selected to participate in the North-South All-Star game. He mentioned he had former teammates and friends that had made the squad in previous years and they had great experiences.
Wilson plans on enrolling at West Virginia Wesleyan College this fall and playing for Coach George Shehl’s Bobcats. He plans to major in secondary education. After that he would like to achieve a master’s degree in counseling, saying he gets great satisfaction from helping people.
Harvey enjoyed his time playing for the Minutemen and spoke highly of the Lewis County coaching staff.
“It was a blessing to be a Minutemen, and the coaching staff was fantastic,” he said.
He also will always remember the feelings he and the team had after notching their playoff win against University.
