Post 29 improves to 5-0

Elkins Post 29 improved to 5-0 with three wins over the weekend.

Post 29 claimed a 12-7 win over Preston County Post 56 Sunday in Area 5 action at Elkins High School.

Brandon Hamons was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out seven and walked one.

Al Johnson led the offensive attack, going 4 for 5, while Cody Gainer went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer and four total RBIs. Colby Gainer also went 3 for 4 and knocked in two runs.

Shane Wiles took the loss for Post 56.

Post 29 swept a doubleheader against Clarksburg Saturday at Frank Loria Field in Nutter Fort, winning by scores of 10-0 and 5-4.

Cody Gainer and Brennan Dettinger combined on a six-inning no-hitter for Elkins in the first game against Post 13.

Gainer went the first five innings, striking out eight and walking four. Dettinger went one inning, striking out two batters.

Johnson led Post 29 at the plate with a homer, while Garrett Riggleman went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Cody and Colby Gainer added two hits each.

Elkins held off a late charge by Clarksburg to win the nightcap.

Post 29 held a 5-1 lead before Post 13 plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Colby Gainer (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Dettinger secured the save, allowing three runs, all unearned, on two hits and fanning one.

Colby Gainer knocked in three runs, including a two-run double, while Dettinger was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

“We’re happy to be off to a good start,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “We just meed to keep up the intensity for an entire game and finish teams off.”

Elkins will return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Romney. Post 29 will then begin Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball action at 9:30 p.m.?Thursday against Pickerington (Ohio).
