Babe Ruth action slated

Elkins has two teams representing West Virginia in Babe Ruth action this week in the Ohio Valley Regional Tournaments.

The Elkins 14-year-old All-Stars will play in Jasper, Ind., while the 15-year-old All-Stars will play in Zanesville, Ohio. Both tournaments begin pool play on Thursday.

There are 12 teams in each of the tournaments, with three pools of four teams. After pool play is concluded, all 12 teams will be seeded and will begin playing a single-elimination bracket. The top four seeds receive a first-round bye.

The Elkins 14 year-old squad will begin pool play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday against Southern Indiana. Elkins pool also includes teams representing Wisconsin and Northern Indiana. The team from Schererville, Ind., representing Northern Indiana, won the 13-year-old Babe Ruth Regional Tournament last year in Somerset, Ky.

Manager Jack Crumm said of his team, “They’re ready to play. They’ve worked really hard and it seems they have gelled.”

“We have a strong pitching staff, and as long as their arms hold out, I think we’ll do well on the mound,” Crumm added. “We have a pretty good defense behind them and good bats throughout the lineup. I’m excited about this year. There is good baseball in this tournament, but there is good baseball in Elkins too. I think we’re ready to make a run here.”

Members of the 14-year-old All-Star squad include Daniel Hamrick, Ben Huffman, Caleb Riggleman, Jace Kyle, Adam Riggleman, Will Crumm, Cory Gillespie, Rece Wamsley, Matt Wilson, David Gainer, Kyle Riggleman, Shane Bodkin and Blake Loftis.

Crumm will be assisted by Ron Huffman and Dan Hamrick, while Todd Riggleman will serve as scorekeeper.

The 15 year-old All-Stars’ pool consists of teams representing Wisconsin, Southern Indiana and Ohio. Their first game is at noon Thursday against the squad from Southern Indiana.

Chris Broughton, manager of the 15 year-old team said, “We’ve had a good week of practice, we’re focused and ready to play. We’re just going to take it one game at a time and have some fun.”

The members of the 15-year-old All-Stars are: Anthony Haden, Joseph Severino, Jared Kerns, Kole Hopwood, Chase Corcoran, Sam Ross, Ryan Hoffman, P.J. Lanham, Daniel Crawford, Jordan Schumacher, Caleb Riggleman and Cole Harlan.

Assisting Broughton will be coaches Tugg Ross and Keith Hopwood, as well as scorekeeper Brad Schumacher.

Both managers wanted to thank the community. “The people of Elkins and Randolph County really supported us throughout our games. They packed the stands, and that helped a lot. They also helped us with fundraising so we could make it to these tournaments.”

The winner of the 14-year-old regional tournament advances to the national tournament in Moses Lake, Wash. The 15-year-old tournament winner advances to Loudoun County, Va.
