Babe Ruth teams see mixed results
The Elkins 14-year-old All-Stars and 15-year-old All-Stars both played in Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regional tournaments on Thursday.
The 14-year-old squad lost 4-3 to Southern Indiana in their tournament in Jasper, Ind., while the 15-year-olds won their contest 14-1 against their Southern Indiana counterpart in Zanesville, Ohio.
The 14-year-old All-Stars had runners in scoring position in the seventh inning but could not bring them home in their heartbreaker.
Manager Jack Crumm lamented, “I think we were the better team but the breaks just didn’t go our way.” He added, “We out hit them 11-8, out pitched them, and had no defensive errors.”
David Gainer had an RBI double for Elkins, scoring Blake Loftis. Rece Wamsley singled in Gainer and Shane Bodkin scored on a passed ball.
Gainer pitched three and a third innings and took the loss.
The 14-year-old All-Stars play games against Northern Indiana and Wisconsin today.
The news for the 15-year-old All-Stars was much better as Caleb Riggleman and Cole Harlan combined on a two-hitter to shut down Southern Indiana in five innings.
Elkins was dominant at the plate as well with several players having multiple hit afternoons.
Joseph Severino was three for three with a double and scored three runs. Both Harlan and Kole Hopwood had a single and a double while Jordan Schumacher had two singles.
P.J. Lanham also crossed the plate three times.
“It was a total team effort,” said manager Chris Broughton. “Everyone contributed and played well and all of the non-starters had hits.”
The run scored by Southern Indiana was unearned.
The 15 year-old All-Stars will play against Wisconsin and Ohio today.
