Bridgeport captures title over Martinsburg
Ben Mossburg’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Bridgeport to a 4-3 win over Martinsburg in the championship game of the Little League 10-11-year-old state tournament Thursday night at Riverbend Park.
Martinsburg took its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh inning as Ryan Barger led off with a double. After the next two batters struck out, Chase Delauter was intentionally walked. Trey Sine then reached on an error with Barger racing home on the errant throw.
Now leading 3-2, Martinsburg was three outs away for the title.
Delauter, who had relieved Ashton Staubs in the sixth inning on the mound, granted a leadoff single to A.J. Goodwin. After a pop-up bunt attempt by Gabe Zummo was caught and a strikeout by Ryan Goff, Bridgeport was down to its final out.
However, Nick Stalnaker was awarded first base on catcher’s interference with two strikes called on him.
Mossburg came to the plate next and hit a screaming drive that hugged the third-base line to plate Goodwin and Stalnaker with the winning runs.
Stalnaker was the starting pitcher for Bridgeport and shut down Martinsburg, retiring the first six batters in order.
Ashton Staubs held Bridgeport at bay in the first inning but in the second, Mossburg led off with a single and took second base on a passed ball. Emily Riggs then brought him in with a single.
Martinsburg answered in the top half of the third inning when Nick Wright hit a double down the third-base line after two outs and scored on an error.
Bridgeport took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth. Riggs reached second base on an error and went to third on a wild pitch. She later scored on a nice bunt by Jaidyn West.
Again, Martinsburg would tie the game in the top of the fifth. Only one hit was surrendered by Stalnaker, but that was a home run by Delauter over left-center field fence.
Bridgeport will now advance to the Tournament of Champions on July 27 in Greenville, N.C.
