Bridgeport tops Fairmont

Bridgeport advanced to the semifinals of the Little League 10-11-year-old state tournament with a 15-1 win over Fairmont Tuesday in quarterfinal action at Riverbend Park.

Fairmont took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bryson Flowers singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tanner Hoskins and trotted home on a single by Zac Frazier.

It was all Bridgeport from that point, however, as the Harrison County squad plated eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take control.

Bridgeport tacked on six more in the second and a single run in the third to end the game in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.

A.J. Godwin and Gabe Zummo went 2 for 3 to lead the winners. Godwin and Emily Riggs each scored three runs.

Riggs, Zummo and Ryan Goff shared the pitching duties for Bridgeport.

Bridgeport will battle Hurricane at 5 p.m. today in semifinal action.

In Tuesday’s late game, which ended after 11 p.m. due to weather delays, Barboursville held off St. Albans, 8-6.

Barboursville led 7-4 before St. Albans used back-to-back homers from Ayden Hodges and Casey Kemplin in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a one-run game.

Jacob Marsh answered with a solo homer in the sixth for Barboursville. St. Albans then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the frame but a strikeout ended the contest.

Barboursville will face Martinsburg at 7 p.m. today in semifinal action.

The championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The winner of the tournament advances to the Tournament of Champions in Greenville, N.C.
