Elkins Babe Ruth All-Star teams fall

The Elkins Babe Ruth All-Stars continued their play in the Ohio Valley Regional tournaments on Friday with both squads losing a pair of games.

The 14-year-old All-Stars, playing in Jasper, Ind., lost another one-run heartbreaker to Wisconsin by a final of 6-5, and then were defeated handily by Northern Indiana, 12-1.

In the first game Elkins again led 5-4 going into the seventh inning but surrendered two runs late in the contest. For the second time in the tournament, the local all-stars outhit their competition, this time belting out 11 hits to Wisconsin’s five.

However, Elkins pitching combined to walk 12 batters and that was its downfall.

Caleb Riggleman, Rece Wamsley, and Kyle Riggleman all had multiple hits in the first game.

Adam Riggleman started on the mound for Elkins in the second game and pitched very well for the first three innings, giving up only three hits.

However, he started tiring in the fourth and Northern Indiana took advantage. It scored four runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth off of both Adam and Kyle Riggleman to pull away for the victory.

The 14-year-olds are seeded 10th and will face the seventh seed today in the single-elimination bracket.

The 15 year-olds, meanwhile, lost both games as well, 13-3 to Wisconsin and 18-6 to Ohio.

Cole Harlan had a nice moment for Elkins when he hit a solo home run in the loss to Ohio.

Manager Chris Broughton said, ” We just didn’t play very well, we have to get re-focused.

The 15-year-olds’ bracket was not known as of presstime.
