Elkins posts big wins
Elkins 12-year-old All-Stars Matthew Gainer, Beau Bright, Jon Phillips and Andrew Hart combined to hit five home runs en route to a 13-2 victory over the Tygarts Valley All-Stars in Little League action on Saturday.
While Bright homered in the first and third innings, it was Gainer’s fifth-inning, two-run blast that put Elkins over the mark, ending the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.
In conjunction with the strong offensive performance, Elkins’ relief pitcher Read Schumacher virtually shut down Tygarts Valley, striking out 10 batters, giving up just three hits and walking only one batter.
Both TV runs came in the first inning as Elkins starting pitcher Jessie Williams struggled, walking four out of the first five batters. Williams allowed just one run, though, before Schumacher took the mound. TV’s only other run was scored on an error by Elkins catcher Logan George.
In addition to his stellar pitching performance, Schumacher went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring three times.
Bright went 3-for-3 with the two home runs and had five RBIs. Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Phillips went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one home run.
Tygarts Valley’s Brett Smith was charged with the loss on the mound, pitching just one inning. Jake Tackett pitched two innings, striking out three, but giving up two hits and an earned run.
On the batting side, Tacket added a double, while Smith and Joel McCauley both added singles.
