State tourney to begin today
Ten teams from around the state will take part in the Little League 10-11-year-old state tournament that begins today at Riverbend Park.
The squads will be broken down into three pools and the top two teams from each will advance to a single-elimination tournament to crown the champion.
Games will be played on two Melvin Heckle Fields at Riverbend Park.
Teams in Pool A include Morgan County, the District 6 runner-up, Hurricane, the District 3 champion, Braxton County, the District 8 runner-up, and St. Albans, the District 3 runner-up.
Barboursville, the District 1 champion, Elkins, the District 8 champion, and Bridgeport, the District 5 champion, will battle in Pool B.
Pool C teams include Vinson, the District 1 runner-up, Fairmont, the District 5 runner-up, and Martinsburg, the District 6 champion.
The Elkins All-Stars will be managed by Matt Davis. Serving as his assistants will be Larry Jones, Chris Weese and Danny Bennett.
Team members include Eli Ballantyne, Allen Bennett, Logan Comer, Nathan Cooper, Levi Corder, Brayden Davis, Tyler Davis, Blake Harris, Anthony Jones, Luke Pawelczyk, Joshua Reckart, Remington Stanley and Brennon Weese.
A welcome picnic for all players and their families will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Riverbend Park. The Beverly Fire Department is hosting the event and grilled chicken and hot dogs will be served.
There is no fee for the picnic but donations will be accepted.
Games will begin at 4 p.m. today with Elkins facing Barboursville. Other games on tap include Morgan County vs. Hurricane at 5 p.m., Braxton County vs. St. Albans at 6 p.m. and Vinson vs. Fairmont at 7 p.m.
Sunday’s tilts include St. Albans vs. Morgan County at 4 p.m., Elkins vs. Bridgeport at 5 p.m., Martinsburg vs. Fairmont at 6 p.m. and Hurricane vs. Braxton County at 7 p.m.
Pool play concludes on Monday with four more games: St. Albans vs. Hurricane at 4 p.m., Braxton County vs. Morgan County at 6 p.m., Martinsburg vs. Vinson at 5 p.m. and Barboursville vs. Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
