Tygarts Valley All-Stars fall to St. Albans, 6-2

SOUTH CHARLESTON – Tygarts Valley manager Greg Smith knew his team would play batter in its second game of the Little League 11-12-year-old state tourney being held at Little Creek Park.

Tygarts Valley did just that, holding an early lead against St. Albans before falling 6-2 in a Pool A contest on Tuesday.

“You take one bad inning away and we’re right there with a chance to win,” said Smith, whose squad lost to South Charleston 20-0 on Sunday. “We had too many mistakes in that inning and it cost us.

“But I’m proud of the effort our kids gave. They showed a lot of improvement from Sunday and our pitchers performed well against a good St. Albans team.”

Tygarts Valley took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Hunter Davis and Jake Tackett scored on a double by Joel McCauley.

St. Albans tied the game in the bottom of the frame before scoring five times in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Brett Smith started for Tygarts Valley and fanned three. Tackett finished in relief as the duo held St. Albans to just five singles.

Daniel White earned the win for St. Albans.

Tygarts Valley will conclude tournament play at 4 p.m. today against Bi-State.
