Editor’s note: The following is the seventh and final in a series of profiles of individuals and teams that will be inducted into the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame at noon today at Gandy Dancer Theatre.

The 1983-84 Elkins High School boys basketball team compiled a record of 18-5 and captured the Big 10 and sectional championships. Both titles were the first Elkins had won since 1967 and the conference championship still remains as the last won in boys basketball by the Tigers.

The sectional title game was a hard-fought victory over rival Buckhannon-Upshur with the Tigers winning the game 59-57 on a last- second shot. Elkins lost to West Fairmont in the regional finals, 78-68, in their quest to make the state tournament.

Guided by head coach Jay Dailer and assistant coach Ron Blake, the team set a then school scoring mark by averaging 73.7 points per game. The senior-dominated roster was led by second team All-State center Mike Fletcher and first team All-Big Ten performer Mike Jackson. Scott Shepherd and Chris Polino were also honored as members of the second team All-Big 10 squad.
