B-U girls use late score to tie Morgantown
TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur and Morgantown battled to a 1-1 deadlock Thursday night in non-conference girls’ soccer action
Most of the first half of the contest was played on the B-U side of the field, with the first 6:00 almost exclusively there.
Morgantown used a fine passing game to keep constant pressure on the Bucs, attempting eight shots on goal and two corner kicks in the first half.
Though B-U could not penetrate with any consistency and only had two shots on goal, it played stellar defense to keep the game scoreless in the first half.
After the intermission, Morgantown picked up where it left off with pressure right off the bat. It was only a matter of time before it would pay off, and at the 43:00 mark, Emily Kennel shot the ball past goalie Megan Wilfong on an assist from Maggie Snively to make it 1-0.
With the goal in hand, Morgantown resumed its passing supremacy and enjoyed almost constant possession of the ball. The goalie for the Mohigans in the second half, Peyton Staddon, stood lonely for most of the time.
With six more shots on goal, five corner kicks and a penalty kick, it seemed Morgantown was poised to score again but the Bucs held the Mohigans at bay with tenacious defense near the goal.
However, with 6:00 remaining in regulation, B-U’s Hannah Stankus played the ball down the right sideline, and from 18 yards outside the box, lifted a shot that went high over the hands of Staddon to tie the score.
It was the only shot on goal for the Bucs in the second half.
In the waning seconds, B-U was awarded a corner kick but the players couldn’t align in time and the game clock expired.
Morgantown captured the junior varsity contest, 1-0.
B-U (0-1-1 will travel to Musselman at 11 a.m. Saturday, while Morgantown will pay a visit Parkersburg South at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
