Elkins High soccer teams best Vikings

Elkins found the net early and often to coast past Petersburg 8-1 Thursday in non-conference play at the EHS field.

The Tigers roared out to the seven-goal cushion in the first half and a lineup of mostly junior varsity players took the field over the final 40:00.

“We played well and stuck together,” Elkins coach Andy Montgomery said. “It was a quality team win and our hats are off to Petersburg for playing the game like gentlemen.”

Linkoln Barger tallied a pair of goals to lead the Tigers.

Cord Elmer, Mason Schoonover, Chris Bodkin, Billy McCauley, Jacob Harper and Daniel Crawford also found the net for the winners.

Clayton Ford scored the lone goal for the Vikings, who dropped to 0-2-0.

Elkins held an 18-2 edge on shots on goal.

Walter King had one stop for the Tigers, while Garrett Willis recorded 10 saves for Petersburg.

The Tigers (3-1-0) will travel to Greenbrier East at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Vikings (0-2-0) will visit Pocahontas County at 7 p.m. on the same date.

Elkins 6, Petersburg 2

Elkins broke out of an early-season offensive slump with a 6-2 win over Petersburg Thursday night at the EHS field.

The Tigers struck for four goals over the first 20:00 of the first half as seniors Kayla Gainer and Isabelle Nieves each found the net twice.

Megan Morral and Hailea Harper tallied second-half goals for Elkins.

The Vikings added two late scores to avoid the shutout.

“Overall we played well, kept our composure and really moved the ball well,” Elkins coach Scott Cutright said. “We created a lot of scoring opportunities and were able to convert.

“That’s been something we’ve had some problems with in our first three games of the season.”

Elkins (2-1-1) will visit Philip Barbour at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Petersburg (0-3) will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for a contest at Pocahontas County.
