Golfers to begin season

Coming off its first appearance in the state tournament last season, the Elkins High School golf team will return to the links today.

The Tigers are slated to compete against Lincoln, Bridgeport and South Harrison at Bel Meadow Country Club in Clarksburg.

A strong nucleus returns for Elkins, including senior Kollin Hopwood and junior Braden Hammond, who both competed in the state tourney last year in Wheeling.

Hammond was low-medalist in the regional tournament.

The Tigers finished eighth overall at states.

Other team members are juniors Kole Hopwood and Joseph Severino, sophomores Brendan Cain, Jared Kerns and Greyson Teets, and freshman Cameron Kalar, Russell Ward, Jacob White and Camryn Zirbs.

David Baird serves as the team’s coach.

Buckhannon-Upshur also is scheduled to begin the season at 4 p.m. today against Liberty at Bel Meadow, while Tygarts Valley opens the campaign at noon Thursday at Bath County (Va.) and Tucker County on Aug. 13 at Trinity.
