Tygarts Valley golfers place third at Pocahontas

MARLINTON – The Tygarts Valley golf team turned in a solid performance in a tri-match against Webster County and Pocahontas County on Thursday.

The Bulldogs finished with a team score of 193 to place third in the event.

Webster County won the match with a 171, while the Warriors held off the Bulldogs by just four strokes.

Webster County’s Mark Bane was the low medalist with a score of 39.

Andrew Morrison and Steven Mick each shot a 44 to lead Pocahontas County.

Alex Hinzman led Tygarts Valley with a score of 43.

“I feel pretty good about the team effort that we put out today,” Tygarts Valley coach Mitch Channell said. “We were playing a guy short and everyone stepped up and played well.

“Webster is a pretty good AA team, and Pocahontas County is one of four or five teams that could win our region. We’re playing with these teams and have a shot at every match. We’ll be OK.”

Tygarts Valley’s next match will be Monday at Valley View in Moorefield.

On Wednesday, Tygarts Valley placed fifth at the Elks Country Club.

Webster County won the match with a 187, followed by Notre Dame with a 193, Petersburg and Tucker County with 198s, and the Bulldogs with a 201.

Ryan Colaw of Petersburg shot a 43 to earn low-medalist honors. Casey Martel and Jared Wegman each had 49s for Tygarts Valley.
