Wildcats too much for TV

MILL CREEK – Tygarts Valley High School opened its football season hosting the Wildcats of Pendleton County Friday night in PVC action.

A game that started out badly ended even worse as the visitors came away with a 34-6 decision.

Pendleton took the opening kickoff off the game and was held to a three- and-out by Tygarts Valley’s defense. But in a sign of things to come, the Wildcats gained possession again when Owen Arbogast was picked off four plays later.

Starting at its own 42, Pendleton County went to the air. Luke Yokum completed two big passes on the drive, a 15 yarder to running back Justice Good, and a 38 yarder to Dylan Dunkle for the first down at the 1-yard line.

The good news for Tygarts Valley was that on the next play Pendleton County fumbled the ball and Tygarts Valley recovered. The bad news was that star running back and defensive back P.J. Lanham suffered an injury on the Good reception and didn’t return to the game.

Tygarts Valley was held without a first down on its next series and the Wildcats wasted no time testing the pass defense of the Bulldogs. Yokum hit Justin Propst for 5 yard and later for 26 yards to the Bulldogs’ 5-yard line. The first quarter ended on that play but on the first play in the second quarter, Good ran five yards up the middle for the score. Yokum completed a pass to Good on the two-point conversion attempt and the score was 8-0 Pendleton County.

The Wildcats would score twice more before halftime. The first on a three play, 45 yard drive, with a 42 yard pass into the end zone from Yokum to Dyllan Wimer with 3:51 left on the clock. That made the score 14-0. The second came on a 23 yard run to paydirt by Good right before halftime with 37 seconds remaining. Good also ran in the two-point conversion for a halftime score of Pendleton County 22, Tygarts Valley 0.

For the first half, Pendleton County had registered 191 yards to Tygarts Valley’s 16 and held the hosts to just two first downs, one by penalty.

The second half started out just as bad when Tygarts Valley’s Ryan Hoffman fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Pendleton County recovered at the 33-yard line.

Yokum had a quarterback sweep for nine yards and the rest came via the legs of Good. With 7:50 showing on the third quarter clock he ran in from four yards out to make the score 28-0

The Bulldogs finally but a drive together in the fourth quarter with a five play, 76-yard drive. After two running plays netted one yard, Arbogast, operating out of the shotgun hit Keighan Chewning for a 45 yard reception to the Pendleton County 30. Two plays later, Derrick Villarico to a toss sweep and weaved his way to the endzone with 8:12 on the clock. The conversion failed but TVHS was on the board.

It did not take long for the visitors to respond however, as the ensuing kickoff 52 yard to the Bulldogs’ 20 yard line.

Yokum hit Propst on a bubble screen to the five and then Tyler Shears ended the scoring for the evening with a five yard scamper off left tackle.
