AB to host Pumas today

PHILIPPI – Alderson Broaddus will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season when it entertains St. Joseph’s College at noon today.

The Battlers (1-1) struggled on the defensive side of the ball in last week’s 60-39 setback at Chowan University.

“We went into the game saying there were two things we could not do – commit turnovers and have critical errors on defense – and we did both,” AB coach Dennis Creehan said. “Our inexperience really showed on the field today.”

Quarterback Wilson Vaughn threw for 281 yards in the loss but was plagued by three interceptions. Andre Garcia, meanwhile, added three touchdown receptions.

The Pumas, who will be making the long trek from Rensselaer, Ind., are 1-1 on the season and coming off a 35-31 setback to Siena Heights University. Braxton Shelton leads the St. Joseph running attack, while quarterback Billy VandeMerkt is ninth in the country in passing yards (720) and has thrown five touchdown passes.

AB will remain home next Saturday to battle Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Wesleyan, meanwhile, will travel to Notre Dame (Ohio) at 2 p.m. for a Mountain East Conference matchup.

The Bobcats gave head coach George Shehl is first career win last week with a 37-7 victory over U.Va.-Wise.

Jeremy Musselman threw for 274 yards and Conner Arlia had 157 yards receiving in the win for the Bobcats (1-1, 1-0 MEC).
