Area teams ready for Week 2 of the season

The second week of the high school season will kickoff Friday night as area schools look to stay unbeaten on the early season or register that elusive first victory.

Philip Barbour, Tucker County, Pendleton County, Moorefield and East Hardy all earned opening-night wins, while Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur, Tygarts Valley and Lewis County came up short in their bids for victories.

Friday night’s card includes Hampshire at Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur at University, Lincoln at Philip Barbour, Tygarts Valley at Tucker County, Petersburg at Pendleton County and Frankfort at Moorefield.

East Hardy is idle.

Elkins and Hampshire combined for 99 points in last season’s game (won by the Tigers, 57-42).

The Trojans just missed the Class AAA playoffs, finishing with a 6-4 mark.

Elkins is looking to bounce back from last week’s 48-14 home loss to Oak Hill.

Mo Kelly and Alex Taylor had touchdown runs for the Tigers with Kelly scoring from 91 yards out on Elkins’ first offensive play from scrimmage.

Philip Barbour’s offense fired on all cylinders in last Friday’s 52-14 win at Grafton. But the Colts face a sterner test in the home opener against Lincoln.

Dillon Newman, who saw time at both quarterback and running back last week, had a pair of touchdowns, while Dylan Johnson rushed for 162 yards and two scores for the Colts.

The Cougars, meanwhile, were impressive in a 24-6 home victory over Braxton County last Thursday as Ty Seibel found the end zone twice and the defense pitched a shutout until the Eagles scored late in regulation.

An early Potomac Valley Conference battle will take place when Tucker County faces Tygarts Valley at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field.

Senior running back Zach Armstrong led the Mountain Lions to a 21-7 win at Pocahontas last Friday, rushing for 145 yards and returning an interception for another score.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will look to rebound from last week’s 34-6 setback to Pendleton County. Leading rusher P.J. Lanham was injured in the first half of that contest and didn’t return.
