Bobcats cruise past Cavs; Battlers fall

BUCKHANNON – Jeremy Musselman threw for 274 yards and the Wesleyan defense picked off four UVa.-Wise passes in a 37-7 win Saturday at Cebe Ross Field.

It was the first Mountain East Conference contest and initial victory for first-year head coach George Shehl.

The Bobcats held a 10-7 lead at intermission before erupting for 27 unanswered points in the second half.

Kasper Bernild’s 31-yard field goal gave Wesleyan a six-point cushion before LaVaughn Hughes busted loose for a 58-yard punt return with 1:14 left in the third quarter to make it 20-7.

Wesleyan tacked on a 50-yard pass from Musselman to Ricky Connor, a 32-yard field goal by Bernild and a 22-yard interception return for a score by Eric Henderson in the final quarter.

Robert Chesson also had a 6-yard touchdown run and Bernild a 23-yard field goal in the first half.

Musselman completed 20 of 39 passes with no interceptions for the Bobcats, while Chesson tallied 50 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

Connor Arlia, a transfer from West Virginia, led the Wesleyan receivers with 11 catches for 157 yards.

Marcus Smith had 6-yard touchdown run in the first half for the Cavaliers (0-2). James Long added 11 catches for 160 yards in a losing effort.

Wesleyan (1-1) will travel to Notre Dame (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Saturday for another conference contest.

Chowan 60, AB 39

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Chowan University outgunned Alderson Broaddus, 60-39, Saturday at Garrison Stadium.

Hawks’ quarterback Cameron Stover tossed six touchdowns and passed for 349 yards as he led Chowan to its most efficient offensive game in program history.

“We went into the game saying there were two things we could not do – commit turnovers and have critical errors on defense – and we did both,” Battler coach Dennis Creehan. “Our inexperience really showed on the field today.”

Andre Garcia had three touchdown receptions, Cooper Schroeder a scoring grab and Isaac Silafau a 90-yard kickoff return for AB (1-1), which will host St. Joseph’s at noon Saturday.
