Bucs, Colts to both face road tests

Buckhannon-Upshur gave Duane Stoeckle his first victory as head coach last week, romping rival Elkins, 42-20.

The Bucs (1-2) will now travel to North Marion (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. today in hopes of earning another win in a Big 10 matchup.

Senior running back Seth Cutright dominated Elkins, accounting for four touchdowns in the game. He carried the ball three times and scored three touchdowns, gaining 155 yards in the process. He also added another score on a 70-yard reception.

Bridgeport shut North Marion out last week, 28-0. Senior Chase Banker lead the team with three catches for 85 yards.

The Bucs won last year’s meeting with the Huskies, 40-20, in Tennerton.

Philip Barbour (2-1)

at Liberty (0-2)

Philip Barbour will have to rely on a new weapon if the team hopes to continue its winning ways.

The Colts will travel to Liberty at 7:30 this evening for a Big 10 Conference matchup. PB is currently tied for 15th in Class AA in the first WVSSAC ratings of the season with Mingo Central.

The Colts will be forced to look for new ways to score after quarterback Dillon Newman was lost for the season after injuring his knee last week in a win at Braxton County. Junior quarterback Tyler Tinchnell will now take over the signal-calling duties. Luckily, he still has plenty of weapons at his disposal. Senior running back Dylan Johnson has already amassed 327 rushing yards, while wide receiver Al Johnson leads the Big 10 with 20 receptions.

Liberty was off last week after losing to Robert C. Byrd and East Fairmont to open the season. Mountaineer senior Jaylen Bartley gained 257 rushing yards combined in the two games.

Pocahontas County (1-2) at East Hardy (2-0)

Pocahontas County will travel to Baker tonight in hopes of handing East Hardy its first loss of the season. Ranked No. 4 in Class A, the Cougars have won 20 straight games at home, dating back to 2011.

East Hardy (2-0) defeated Craig County (Va.), 48-12, last week. Quarterback Cole Collier threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 48 yards rushing, while Tyler Smith had 93 yards rushing and also caught nine passes for 85 yards. Tyler Murphy chipped in seven catches for 122 yards and two scores, Jake Sager added 65 yards rushing and 11 tackles on defense.

In their contest last week, Pocahontas County (1-2) defeated Pendleton County, 36-12.

Senior running back Devin Rose rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while adding an interception for another score in the victory.

East Hardy won last year’s meeting, 39-0.

In other area action this evening, Pendleton County will entertain Bath County (Va.). Big 10 Conference games on tap include Bridgeport at Robert C. Byrd, East Fairmont at Lincoln and Grafton at Weir.

Lewis County and Fairmont Senior are idle this week, while PVC member Petersburg will travel to Clear Spring (Md.) for a Saturday contest.
