D&E booters sweep Scots in league play

The Davis and Elkins College men’s and women’s soccer teams had their G-MAC Conference openers Thursday afternoon, hosting Ohio Valley.

The men’s team was completely dominant in a 7-0 rout, while the women claimed a 3-0 victory.

The Senators (1-3-1, 1-0-0) wasted no time in pressuring the Vienna-based school in the first game. D&E earned a flurry of corner kicks but the Scots’ defense held until the 15th minute. That’s when James Pucci found the net off an assist by Branko Dugalic. It would be Pucci’s first of four goals in the match.

His second goal came just six minutes later when he blistered a shot that OVU’s goalkeeper D’Arcy Turner saved but the ball ricocheted off his chest straight back to Pucci and he punched it in.

The Senators closed out the first half scoring on a header by Benjamin Pastur off of a Dugalic corner kick.

The second half began with another shot on goal by Pucci and a header by Dugalic that went high within the first five minutes. At the 53rd minute, Pucci took a pass and broke away unimpeded toward the goal. OVU’s Turner stood no chance as Pucci slid the ball into the netting for a 4-0 lead.

Pucci’s final goal came in the 64th minute on an assist by Lucas Gross-Puppendahl.

Constant pressure on the Scots forced them into a mistake just one minute later when they inadvertently kicked a ball into their own goal to make the score 6-0 in favor of D&E.

It only took 25 seconds for reserve Grant Braun to score an unassisted goal for the final tally.

The hosts never went into a possession game and kept attacking until the end. The Senators were just too fast for OVU on this day and intercepted pass-after-pass.

The stats back up the total control of the match by D&E. It led in corner kicks, 14-1, and in shots on goal by a 27-5 margin. Of those five shots by the Scots, only one was truly on target and that was gobbled up easily by D&E’s goalkeeper, Cameron Rivera.

The second match of the day featured the Senator women and Allison Bogar was the star, scoring two goals for the hosts.

Although a majority of the first half was played on OVU’s side of the field, the shots on goal were almost even with D&E holding a slight 6-5 advantage.

It wasn’t until the 38th minute Bogar found the net after a sequence started by an Emma Davis corner kick.

However, only three minutes elapsed in the second half before Bogar struck again, this time on a header off of a cross.

This game was more even in execution and intensity than then preliminary men’s match but the Senators advantage was their near-goal defense, which didn’t allow a shot with any pop, as D&E goalkeeper Courtney Postma had no problems stopping an OVU threat.

The hosts’ final goal came in the 73rd minute when newly-activated LaiaMargenat Dordas hit a roller past Ohio Valley’s Kourtney Breiner with an assist from Taylor Morton.

Of note, D&E had to play with only 10 players for over two minutes in the second half while Morton was being treated for an injury.

The victory gave the Senators (1-4, 1-0 G-MAC) their first win of the season.

The D&E men will visit California University of Pennsylvania for their next match at 3 p.m. on Saturday, while.

The women’s team will entertain Slippery Rock at 2 p.m. on the same day.
