Elkins High volleyball team picks up first win
Elkins picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16) victory over Preston Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference volleyball play at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.
Leading the Tigers were junior Laken Hitt, who had four set assists, three solo blocks, six ace serves, six kills and eight attacks, and Taylor Miller with three set assists, five digs, two solo blocks, 14 kills and 13 attacks. Cassie Plishka added nine ace serves, seven kills and nine attacks, and Kayla Simmons two kills and eight attacks.
“We played very well as a team tonight,” Elkins coach Penny Crawford said. “The girls really pulled together and deserved to get this win.”
Preston took the junior varsity contest, 16-25, 25-12, 24-26. Bailey Topping had five ace serves and Carrie Isenhart four ace serves for the Tigers.
Elkins (1-5) will return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Marion for another league contest.
High school golf
TV places third
Tygarts Valley placed third in tightly-contested four-team match Wednesday at the Elks Course.
Petersburg won the match with a team score of 186, followed by Webster County (191) Tygarts Valley (193) and Pocahontas County (202).
Petersburg was led by Brian George, who shot a 45, followed by Ryan Colaw and Chris Sullivan with 46s. Webster County was led by Tony Mazella (43) and Mark Bane (44).
Cody Grimmett led the way for the Bulldogs with a 46, followed by Alex Hinzman and Jared Wegman with 47s. Pocahontas County’s B.J. Wilfong was low medalist with a score of 40.
Tygarts Valley and Pocahontas County will compete in Class A, Region 2 tournament Monday in Moorefield.
“We are in a very competitive region,” Bulldog coach Mitch Channell said. “There are five teams in the region that have just as good a shot as anyone else to end up in Wheeling (for the state tournament)
“It’s going to be a great match.”

B-U boys hold off East
TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur held off East Fairmont, 2-1, Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference action.
Josh Tenney and Trey Short had goals for the Bucs, while Marty Elliott and Dylan Hall provided assists.
Connor Fitz had the lone goal for the Bees, who trailed 1-0 at intermission.
Chris Orwig had four saves for the hosts.
B-U (10-1) will visit Shady Spring at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
