Festival meet to be held Saturday

Fifteen high schools from around the state will converge on the campus of Davis &?Elkins College on Saturday for the annual Mountain State Forest Festival Invitational.

Along with host school Elkins, other participants include, Buckhannon-Upshur, Braxton County Cameron, Capital, Charleston Catholic, Hampshire, Hurricane, Lewis County, Nicholas County, Robert C. Byrd, Scott, Trinity Christian, Tucker County and Webster County.

The boys’ race will feature five runners among the Top 20 in the state, according to the runwv.com power ratings. They include Elkins’ Austin Hamrick and Matt Wallace, along with Hampshire’s Casey Freezie, Webster’s Brettley Harris and Charleston Catholic’s Caden McClanahan.

In the team competition, Elkins, which is ranked eighth in the state, No. 10 Hampshire and Charleston Catholic and Webster County, tied for ninth in Class AA-A, are the favorites.

While the boys’ race has several contenders for the team title, the Hampshire girls are the clear-cut favorite. The Trojans are ranked third in the state, and feature three runners among the top 20 in the state – Ashleigh Martin, Rachel Lipps and Morgan Roach.

Capital’s Peyton Panger will be challenged by the Hampshire trio of runners for the individual title.

The action will begin at 10:15 a.m. with the girls’ varsity race, followed by the boys’ varsity meet at 11 a.m.

A combined junior varsity race will be conducted at 11:45 a.m.
