Hawks fly past TVHS

LOST CREEK – Dylan Jeffries ran for 154 yards, and Ian Riggleman threw for three touchdowns as South Harrison picked up its first win of the season by defeating Tygarts Valley 35-6 here Friday.

South Harrison, 1-2, blew open the game in the second quarter, putting up three scores to expand on its 7-0 lead from the opening quarter.

“They just four-yarded us to death,” Tygarts Valley coach Joseph Arbogast said.

Riggleman threw his first touchdown pass of the evening on the Hawks’ first possession, connecting with Cory Messenger for a 24-yard strike. Riggleman accounted for the second South Harrison score with his legs, following his offensive linemen into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to start the second quarter. He later threw a 15-yard pass to Hunter Hitt for a touchdown, and Jeffries plunged in from a yard out in the waning seconds of the first half to give South Harrison a 28-0 lead at intermission.

Tygarts Valley, 0-3, played with a renewed spirit to open the second half, recovering a fumble deep in Hawks’ territory on the first play from scrimmage. After the first two plays resulted in Tygarts Valley being a yard further away than when it first started the drive, Owen Arbogast rolled out and found Derrick Villarico open, allowing Villarico to tiptoe his way by a defender at the goal line for what would be the Bulldogs’ only score on the evening.

“In the third quarter, we did well,” Joseph Arbogast said. “We have to figure out a way to put four of those quarters together.”

Austin Davis scored midway through the final quarter for South Harrison to give the Hawks the 35-6 margin that would be the final score.

Jeffries picked up his 154 yards on 25 carries, most of those coming in the first half. Davis rushed for 41 yards on five carries. Riggleman completed eight of 13 passes for 200 yards. Hitt caught three of those passes for 31 yards. Cory Messenger had two catches for 82 yards, and Austin Barker had two catches for 67 yards.

Tygarts Valley was led by Villarico, who carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards. He also pulled down three passes for 43 yards. Dalton Vandevander ran for 18 yards on nine carries. Keighan Chewing had two catches for 17 yards to go along with 18 rushing yards. Owen Arbogast completed five of his 16 passes for 60 yards.

Tygarts Valley is idle Sept. 20, then returns to action to host Potomac Valley Conference rival East Hardy on Sept. 27.
