High school golf regionals set to begin today

High school regional golf action will begin today for area schools.

Elkins will venture to the Woods Resort in Hedgesville for the Class AAA, Region II tourney.

Other teams taking part include Buckhannon-Upshur, Hedgesville, Jefferson, Washington, Martinsburg and Musselman.

The Tigers, who advanced to the state tourney for the first time last season, are led by Braden Hammond and Kollin Hopwood.

Both competed in states last year in Wheeling and were All-Big 10 Conference selections this past season.

Tygarts Valley and Tucker County, meanwhile, will compete in the Class A, Region II tournament at Moorefield’s Valley View Golf Club.

Pocahontas County, East Hardy, Moorefield, Notre Dame and South Harrison are others expected to challenge for the regional crown.

Jared Wegman and Alex Hinzman both were selected to the All-Potomac Valley Conference squad, along with Tucker County’s Ian Nichols.

Philip Barbour’s regional destination will be the Pete Dye Course in Bridgeport. The Colts will battle Berkeley Springs, Bridgeport, Frankfort, Grafton, Keyser, Liberty-Harrison, Lincoln, Petersburg and Robert C. Byrd for the Class AA, Region II banner.

The top two teams in each region qualify for the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 8-9 at Wheeling’s Oglebay Park.
