Hurricane harriers breeze in both races
Hurricane breezed to both titles at the Mountain State Forest Festival cross country meet held Saturday at Davis &?Elkins ?College.
The Redskins finished with 45 points to take the boys’ title. Elkins was second with 72 points, followed by Hampshire (87), Webster County (126), Capital (141),?Charleston?Catholic (148), Nicholas County (185), Cameron (194), Trinity (232), Buckhannon-Upshur (233) and Lewis County (260).
Webster County’s Brettley Harris cleared the course in a time of 17:47 to win the individual title. Elkins’ Austin Hamrick was second (17:55) and teammate Matt Wallace third (18:24).
Other Tiger finishers included Dalton Hamrick 18th (19:44), Ben Huffman 22nd (19:53), Remington Knight 29th (20:06), Brendan Wallace 38th (20:51) and Will Gongola (22:24).
“The boys team had a great race,” Elkins coach Shellie Burda said. “Austin and Matt really make a powerful combination at the front. The younger boys are really catching on how to run a high school race. We hope to continue to improve.”
Joseph Smith finished 35th to lead the Bucs.
Hurricane tallied 30 points to outdistance Charleston Catholic (74) in the girls’ race. Hampshire (98) was third, followed by Capital (113), Scott (137), Trinity (162), Nicholas County (186), B-U (188), Braxton County (202), Elkins (222) and Tucker County (233).
The individual champion was Capital’s Peyton Panger in a time of 20:50.
Hannah Gongola finished 31st with a time of 25:00 and Monica Rossi 34th (25:23) to lead the EHS girls. Other finishers were Sophie Hummer 41st in 25:52, Jaycie Saseen 72nd in 29:54 and Katy Ross 73rd in 29:59.
Freshman Laura Dean placed 25th for B-U.
Elkins will return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Buckhannon-Upshur Invitational.
