Tiger golfers prevail at Fairmont

FAIRMONT – Elkins recorded its lowest team score of the season in taking a tri-match against Fairmont Senior and North Marion Thursday at Green Hills Country Club.

Kollin Hopwood fired a 36 to lead the Tigers, who finished with a 159. The Polar Bears and Huskies both finished with 171s.

Braden Hammond added a 38 for Elkins, followed by Joseph Severino, Kole Hopwood (43) and Camryn Zirbs and Mason Schoonover (52s).

North Marion’s Colton Holbert was low medalist with a 35. Bailey Mohr led Fairmont Senior with a 37.

Elkins is slated to host Lewis County at 4 p.m. Wednesday

Lewis County places third

CLARKSBURG – Mark Moran fired an 8-over par round of 43 Thursday at the Clarksburg Country Club, and Lewis County finished third in four-team high school golf match.

Bridgeport, led by medalist Austin Williams’ 37, took top team honors with a total of 170. Notre Dame finished second with a 183 total, followed by Lewis County, 204, and Liberty, 212.

Conner Thomas shot a 53 for Lewis County, who also had Luke Pudder, 54; Ethan Hull, 54; Bryson Butcher, 58; and Lucas Skidmore, 66; competing in the match.

Bridgeport also received 44s from Ben Smith and Jim Doukas. Alex Demary fired a 42 to lead Notre Dame, and Elijah Knight carded a 45 for the Irish.

Liberty was paced by Ty Wickline’s 50.

Lewis County will host Big 10 foes Liberty and Lincoln at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Stonewall Resort.

Women’s college soccer

Shepherd 1, D&E 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN – The Davis & Elkins women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Shepherd in its season opener on Thursday.

Shepherd’s Courtney Baltizar broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal just 2:00 into the second half.

The Rams held a 15-12 advantage in total shots. Ashley Winkelspecht made six saves in net for the Senators.

The Senators will look to get into the win column at 4 p.m. today as they host Lake Erie.
