Tigers to honor seniors tonight

Elkins will look to send its seniors out on a winning note at 7:30 p.m. today when Fairmont Senior visits Wimer Field for a Big 10 Conference encounter.

Thirteen seniors will be playing in their final home game for the Tigers, who also look to register their initial victory of the season.

“We talked to the seniors this week in practice about making their last home game one they will remember,” Elkins coach Greg Hott said. “We went them to go out on a positive note … not a negative one.”

The Tigers will look to rebound from last week’s disappointing loss at Preston, which rallied from a 26-0 deficit to claim a 47-26 decision.

“We didn’t tackle very well, and everything just seemed to fall apart,” Hott said of the setback to the Knights. “Once they started coming back, the emotional high we were on early in the game just dropped.

“I think that falls back to the inexperience of being in that situation and something we have to learn from and move on.”

Senior Dylan Lucas tops Elkins in rushing with 400 yards on 67 carries. Ben Lonergan has accumulated 336 on 73 attempts.

Senior linebacker Isaac Riggleman leads the defense with 24 total tackles, followed by fellow senior Tyler Pifer with 22 and John Huffman with 21.

Senior safety Trevor Kiess returned from an injury last week against Preston and registered three tackles in his first action of the season.

The 3-0 Polar Bears enter the contest ranked first in Class AA and have outscored their three opponents by a margin of 145-33.

Senior Noah Harmon has rushed for 557 yards on 30 carries for Fairmont Senior in wins over Robert C. Byrd, North Marion and Preston. Quarterback Austin Norman, meanwhile, has thrown for 610 yards and seven touchdown passes.

“Their offense concerns me,” Hott said. “They have an excellent passing game and we have a lot of young players in our secondary,” Hott said. “(Harmon) is a big back and very hard to tackle. We’re going to have to wrap him up and not let him get to the next level.”

Elkins will be idle next week before ending the season with five straight road games.
